From: Lucía
Subject: English club trip

Hi,

Thanks for joining the English club! We're organising a day trip next month and we'd like to hear your ideas. We could visit the historic town of Santa Clara, or we could spend the day at the coast. Which would you prefer? We also need to decide how to get there.

Best wishes,

Lucía

Your notes

  • Respond: Tell Lucía which trip you prefer and why.
  • Give details: Say what you would like to do there.
  • Suggest: Suggest a way of travelling.

Write your email to Lucía.

Hi Lucía,

Thanks for your email – the trip sounds like a great idea! I'd definitely prefer to go to the coast. We spend most of the year in the city, so a day by the sea would make a nice change.

If the weather's good, I'd love to walk along the cliffs in the morning and then have lunch at one of the seafood restaurants by the harbour. Maybe in the afternoon some of us could try kayaking?

As for getting there, why don't we hire a coach? It would be cheaper than the train if we share the cost, and we could all travel together.

See you at the next meeting,

Álex

Essay or article / review

Eliges entre dos tareas: un ensayo y otra que puede ser un artículo o una reseña. Aquí tienes un ensayo y una reseña.

Opción 1: Essay

Your teacher has asked you to write an essay giving your opinion on this question: Should young people have to do volunteer work before they finish school?

Da tu opinión con claridad, con argumentos a favor y en contra, y una conclusión.

Opción 2: Review

You see this notice on an English-language website: Reviews wanted! Have you been to a café or restaurant recently that you would recommend? Write a review describing the place, the food and the atmosphere, and say who you would recommend it to.

Ponle un título, describe el sitio con detalles concretos y termina con una recomendación clara.

Many schools encourage students to do volunteer work, and some people believe it should be compulsory. In my view, there are good arguments on both sides.

On the one hand, volunteering teaches young people skills they rarely learn in the classroom, such as teamwork and responsibility. It also allows them to meet people from different backgrounds, which can make them more understanding.

On the other hand, students already have a heavy workload, especially in their final years, and adding more obligations could cause stress. Moreover, if volunteering is forced, some students may do it without any real interest, which would not help anyone.

To sum up, I believe schools should offer volunteering and make it easy to take part, but it should remain a choice rather than a requirement.

Café Lumbre: the best breakfast in town

If you're looking for a relaxed place to start the weekend, Café Lumbre is hard to beat. It's a small café in the old part of town, with wooden tables, lots of plants and big windows that let in plenty of light.

The menu is short, but everything is freshly made. I had scrambled eggs with avocado and homemade bread, which were delicious, and my friend loved the banana pancakes. The coffee is excellent too, although it's slightly more expensive than in other places.

The atmosphere is calm during the week, but it gets very busy on Sunday mornings, so it's worth booking a table.

I'd recommend Café Lumbre to anyone who enjoys a long, slow breakfast with friends. It isn't the cheapest option, but it's definitely worth it.
