Short extracts with pictures
Cinco grabaciones cortas.
1A young woman is leaving a voicemail message for her flatmate. What does she want him to buy?
Respuesta: cheese.
Transcripción: Woman: Hi Tom, it's me. I'm going to be home late tonight, so could you pick something up on your way back? We've got plenty of pasta, and I bought tomatoes yesterday, so don't worry about those. But we've run out of cheese, and we can't really have pasta without it, can we? Oh, and I think there's still some milk, so there's no need to get that. Thanks!
2A man is talking to a friend about his weekend. What did he do on Saturday?
Respuesta: painted a flat.
Transcripción: Woman: Did you manage to go climbing on Saturday in the end?
Man: No, it was pouring with rain all morning, so the trip was cancelled. I was going to go to the cinema instead, but my brother called and asked me to help him paint his new flat, so that's what I did all day. I'm going climbing next weekend instead, hopefully.
3A woman is talking to a shop assistant. Which bag does she buy?
Respuesta: a shoulder bag with a long strap.
Transcripción: Woman: Excuse me, I'm looking for a bag I can take to work – something big enough for a laptop.
Man: How about this backpack? It's very popular.
Woman: Hmm, I'd prefer something I can carry on my shoulder, to be honest.
Man: Then this one might suit you. It's got a long strap and a separate section for a laptop.
Woman: That's perfect. And it's not too heavy, either. I'll take it.
4A man is leaving a message for a colleague. Where does he suggest they meet?
Respuesta: in a café.
Transcripción: Man: Hi Sara, it's Mike. About our meeting tomorrow – the meeting room on the third floor is booked all day, unfortunately. We could use my office, but it's really small and there's building work going on outside. So why don't we meet in the café across the road instead? It's usually quiet in the mornings. Let me know if that works.
5A woman is telling a friend about a trip. How did she get to the island?
Respuesta: by plane.
Transcripción: Man: How was the trip to the island?
Woman: Lovely! We were going to take the ferry, but it was fully booked, so we ended up flying from the mainland in a tiny plane. It only took twenty minutes. Then we hired bikes to get around once we were there.
Man: Sounds great.
Note completion
You will hear a coordinator talking to a group of new volunteers at a city museum. For questions 1–5, choose the correct answer (A, B or C) to complete the notes.
MUSEUM VOLUNTEERS: FIRST DAY
0Most volunteers will work in the … galleries
1Shifts. Arrive at the museum … before your shift.
Respuesta: 15 minutes. «A quarter of an hour» son 15 minutos.
2Visitors. The question visitors ask most often is about …
Respuesta: where to find the dinosaurs. «By far the question we hear most is “Where are the dinosaurs?”». Las otras preguntas también salen, pero menos.
3The café. During each shift, volunteers can get a free …
Respuesta: drink.
4Safety. In an emergency, volunteers should first …
Respuesta: contact the security team.
5Changes. If you can't do a shift, …
Respuesta: use the online calendar.
Transcripción: Woman: Good morning, everyone, and welcome to the City Museum volunteer team. I'm Helen, the volunteer coordinator. Some of you may have seen volunteers working in our gift shop, but in fact most of you will spend your time in the galleries, helping visitors and answering their questions. Let's start with your shifts. Shifts are four hours long. The doors open to the public at ten, and we ask you to be here a quarter of an hour before your shift begins. That gives you time to put your things in a locker and pick up your badge. Some people like to come half an hour early to have a coffee first, which is fine, but it isn't required. Now, you'll be asked all sorts of questions. You might expect people to want directions to the toilets, or to ask when the café closes, and those do come up. But by far the question we hear most is 'Where are the dinosaurs?' – so make sure you know the way to the natural history rooms on the first floor. On a practical note, the café is very generous to our volunteers. Unfortunately, it can't offer free lunches any more, but you can have a free tea or coffee during each shift. And if you want lunch, you get ten per cent off. Safety is important. If there's ever an emergency – if someone feels ill, for example – don't try to deal with it yourself, and don't wait for a manager to arrive. Call the security team straight away on the radio you'll be given. They're trained in first aid and will take charge. Finally, we understand that plans change. If you can't do a shift, please don't email me, because I don't always see messages in time. Instead, go to the online calendar and mark the shift as free there. That way, other volunteers can see it and take it.
Matching opinions to speakers
You will hear a man and a woman talking about an evening photography course they are taking. For questions 1–5, decide whether each opinion is expressed by the woman, the man, or both of them.
0The course involves more work than expected. … Both
1The teacher explains difficult ideas clearly.
Respuesta: Woman.
2The weekly assignments take up too much time.
Respuesta: Man.
3The editing sessions have been the most useful part.
Respuesta: Both. Ella dice que han sido muy útiles y él responde «that's been the best thing for me too».
4The group is too large.
Respuesta: Woman.
5They intend to take the advanced course.
Respuesta: Man.
Transcripción: Man: So, what do you think of the photography course so far? I have to say, it's a lot more work than I thought it would be.
Woman: Me too! I imagined we'd just be taking nice pictures at the weekend, not reading about the history of cameras.
Man: Exactly. What do you make of Daniel as a teacher?
Woman: I really like him. Whenever I don't understand something technical, like how shutter speed works, he finds a simple way of putting it.
Man: Really? I often find him confusing, to be honest. He talks very fast and jumps from one topic to another.
Woman: Hmm, maybe. And what about the weekly assignments? I quite enjoy them.
Man: I don't. They take me hours every week, and I work full time. I think they should be shorter.
Woman: Well, I suppose I've got more free time than you. What I've found really helpful is the editing sessions. I had no idea how much you could improve a photo on the computer.
Man: Oh, absolutely – that's been the best thing for me too. My holiday photos look completely different now.
Woman: The only thing I'd change is the size of the group. There are twenty-five of us, so Daniel can't really give everyone feedback.
Man: It doesn't bother me. I quite like hearing what other people think of my photos. Anyway, are you going to do the advanced course in the spring?
Woman: I'm not sure. It's quite expensive, and I might be changing jobs.
Man: I've already decided. I'm going to sign up as soon as registration opens.
Short extracts
Cinco grabaciones cortas. Lee la situación y la pregunta, escucha y elige la respuesta correcta (A, B o C).
1You hear a man leaving a voicemail message for a hotel. Why is he calling?
Respuesta: to check that he can collect his key late.
Transcripción: Man: Hello, my name's Peter Wallace. I have a reservation with you for three nights from Friday. I'm not calling to cancel, don't worry – but my train now gets in much later than planned, at around midnight. I just wanted to check that someone will be at reception then to give me my key. Could you call me back to confirm? Thanks.
2You hear a woman talking about a book. How does she feel about it?
Respuesta: disappointed that it didn't stay interesting.
Transcripción: Woman: Everyone told me I'd love it, and the first few chapters were brilliant – I couldn't put it down. But then the story just went on and on, and by the end I didn't really care what happened to the characters. It's a shame, because the writing is beautiful.
3You hear two friends talking about a festival. What do they decide to do?
Respuesta: go on Saturday evening.
Transcripción: Man: Are you still up for the festival on Saturday?
Woman: Yes, but have you seen the forecast? Heavy rain all afternoon.
Man: Oh no. We could go on Sunday instead – it's supposed to be sunny.
Woman: I'm working on Sunday, though. What about going on Saturday evening? The rain should have stopped by then, and the best bands are on later anyway.
Man: Good idea. Let's do that.
4You hear a man talking to a colleague. What is he going to do this evening?
Respuesta: work on a report for his manager.
Transcripción: Woman: You're still here? I thought you were leaving early to collect your car from the garage.
Man: I was, but the garage called – they need another day. So I thought I'd stay and finish the report for tomorrow's meeting.
Woman: Oh, the one for the clients?
Man: No, that one's done. It's the budget report for the manager.
5You hear a woman talking about learning to drive. What does she say?
Respuesta: She regrets not learning earlier.. «I just wish I'd done it sooner».
Transcripción: Woman: I put off learning to drive for years because I was convinced I'd be terrible at it. My friends kept telling me it was easy, which made it worse, to be honest. In the end I had lessons with an instructor who was really calm, and I passed first time. I just wish I'd done it sooner – it's made my life so much easier.
